5 Tips to Improve Tenant Communication
Over communication in the property management business is something that is difficult to do especially when dealing with tenants. Whether by phone, email, or smoke signal tenant communication is important. Here are 5 ways to improve your communication skills.
- Provide hard copies of everything – It is called snail mail for a reason, but nothing is better for official communication than hard copy paperwork.
- Certify everything – This goes along with the first point. It is always nice to have confirmation that documents have been received.
- Take emotion out of the situation – This is strictly a business relationship. It may be hard to not accept their excuse for late or non-payment, but if you aren’t collecting rent then you aren’t bringing anything in. Be clear and consistent.
- Be clear about your expectations – This can be easily spelled out in the lease, but make sure that tenants are aware of important due dates. Sending a friendly reminder doesn’t hurt either.
- Keep the line of communication open – Whether that be sending emails or doing inspections. Communicating with your tenants shows that you care.
